Markup for MAC

Free, open-source Markdown editor that shows your notes like a clean web page, with a vault, backlinks, graph view, search and HTML export.

Markup Overview

Markup is a free, open-source Markdown editor for the Mac that is built around reading. Open a folder of notes and each file is rendered as a clean document, with KaTeX math, Mermaid diagrams, syntax-highlighted code, tables and task lists, instead of a plain text box. Press E to edit in WYSIWYG mode or Command-/ for the raw Markdown source, so reading, editing and source view are always one keystroke apart.

Your folder works as a vault, with wikilinks, backlinks, a graph view, Quick Open and full-text search across every note. Markup is built on Tauri, which uses the system web view rather than Electron, and its developer measures about 88 MB of memory when idle. It is made by Oratis under the MIT licence, with no account, paywall or telemetry. Version 1.1.0 lets wide tables and long code blocks use the full window width, actually draws Mermaid diagrams and halves the JavaScript loaded at startup. There are separate downloads for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, both signed and notarized by Apple, and the app needs macOS 10.15 or later.

Key Features

Markup puts reading first and keeps editing a keystroke away.

  • Three modes: read rendered notes, edit in WYSIWYG or switch to raw Markdown.
  • Rich rendering: KaTeX math, Mermaid diagrams, highlighted code, tables and task lists.
  • Vault: open any folder of .md files with a file tree and tabs.
  • Linked notes: wikilinks, backlinks and a graph view.
  • Fast search: Quick Open and full-text search across the whole vault.
  • Writing comfort: Light, Dark and Sepia themes, plus focus and typewriter modes.
  • Pasted images: saved into the vault and shown inline.
  • Export: preview or save a note as a themed HTML page, or print to PDF.

What’s New in Version 1.1.0

Markup 1.1.0 gives wide content more room, draws Mermaid diagrams and starts faster.

  • Wide tables and long code blocks can now extend beyond the text column, up to the edge of the window
  • Mermaid diagrams are now drawn, follow the Light, Dark or Sepia theme and fall back to the source when the syntax is wrong
  • The JavaScript loaded at startup is about half its previous size
  • First Windows and Linux packages; only the macOS version updates itself automatically
